This course is for people who want to work as a health services assistant. You will learn about legal and ethical issues in health
care, effective communication strategies, anatomy and physiology and occupational health and safety. You will be required to undertake a
clinical work placement of 50 hours in a health care facility. A minimum of 37 of these work placement hours must
be undertaken in an acute care facility.
Vocational outcomes
Assistant in nursing in public and private acute care, aged care or health facilities. This course is Nationally Recognised Training. It is accredited under the Australian
Qualifications Framework (AQF), a nationally agreed framework which identifies
the qualifications available in three sectors of education: schools, vocational
education and training, and higher education.
Entry requirements
NSW School Certificate or equivalent.You need to be aware that to undertake and successfully
complete this course you will be required to have a National Criminal History
Record Check. The NSW Department of
Health requires that any person who provides care within an acute care facility
must have a police check prior to being present 'on site'. As work placement in
an acute care facility is essential to receive this qualification learners must
have a current National Criminal History Record Check P799: Application for National Criminal History Record Check
(Standard Disclosure). You will
also be required to have a current immunisation against a variety of diseases. Please see http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/publichealth/immunisation/ohs/ for further information.
You will be required to pay for the screening and immunisation if needed.
Please note that depending on the result of your criminal record checks you may be prevented from working in an Acute Care setting.

Embedded qualifications
There are no embedded qualifications in this course.
TAFE NSW fee
$362.00 per semester, $724.00 per year. Fees for full-year courses can be paid in two
equal payments. The first payment is due
when you enrol. The second payment is
due by 31 May. TAFE NSW does not accept cash. Payment can be made by Visa, Mastercard,
EFTPOS, cheque or money order made payable to TAFE NSW.
A capped fee of $218.00
per semester, $436.00 per year applies for registered apprentices and trainees (once suitable evidence has
been sighted) depending on the course you are enrolled in. Please contact your college for further
details, prior to enrolment.
People who receive
some Commonwealth allowances may be eligible for a concession fee
of $53.00 per course per year. If you receive a Disability Support payment
or are a Client of a Teacher/Consultant for Students with a Disability, you are
eligible for one individual fee exemption per calendar year. For any subsequent enrolments in the same
year, you will be able to enrol for the concession fee. You need to provide proof of your
Commonwealth allowance at the time of enrolment (e.g. pension card or a letter
from Centrelink which is less than one month old), and your CRN if applicable.
People of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent are exempt from payment of
the TAFE NSW fee.

An acute care textbook may also be purchased and will cost
approximately $150.00.
